The Chaldon Doom

A wall painting dated to about 1170 in St Peter and St Paul’s Church, Chaldon, shows the Ladder of Salvation and the torments of the damned. It is among the earliest surviving paintings of its kind in England, and the reason many visitors find their way to this quiet corner of Surrey.

The Surrey Iron Railway

Opened in 1803 between Wandsworth and Croydon and later extended towards Merstham, the horse-drawn plateway is often described as the first public railway in the world. Sections of its route ran through the Coulsdon valley, which is why the name survives on local maps.

What is on the map

A short reading of the places we hold for each district.

CR3 (Caterham, Chaldon, Whyteleafe, Woldingham and Woldingham Garden Village) has 372 mapped places: 71 for food and drink, 28 health services and 22 parks and green spaces. Food and drink make up 19% of the places there, and 17 stay open past 9pm.

CR8 (Purley, Kenley, Woodcote, Russell Hill, Portley & Queens Park and Whyteleafe) has 334 mapped places: 100 for food and drink, 29 health services and 17 parks and green spaces. Food and drink make up 30% of the places there, and 15 stay open past 9pm.

CR5 (Coulsdon, Old Coulsdon, Chipstead, Netherne-on-the-Hill and Hooley) has 259 mapped places: 58 for food and drink, 20 health services and 14 parks and green spaces. Food and drink make up 22% of the places there, and 9 stay open past 9pm.

CR3 has 1.4 times as many mapped places as CR5, which reflects how much of each district is built up as well as how completely it has been mapped. Compare districts with the table above rather than reading the totals alone.

Every place has its own page with opening hours where they are listed, the nearest alternatives and its distance from nearby homes. Food businesses carry the Food Standards Agency hygiene rating, and owners can claim a listing to correct hours, a website or a phone number.

Using opening hours

Of the 110 places with published hours, 56% open on Sundays, against the 37% that stay open past 9pm, so Sunday trading is far more common than late evening trading. Sunday hours are often shorter, so check the closing time on the listing before you set out.

Opening-hours filters work best for pubs, cafés, supermarkets and pharmacies, where hours are most often recorded. Doctors and dentists keep their own appointment times, and parks and playgrounds are open at all hours unless the listing says otherwise.

If you find a place that is closed, moved or missing, use the report link on its page. Corrections are checked and applied to the data, and the change appears on the district page and in search.

Hours come from OpenStreetMap contributors, so a place without listed hours is not necessarily closed; it simply has no hours recorded. The lists above only include places that publish hours, which makes them a safer guide to late and Sunday opening than to the full picture.

Distances on listing pages are straight-line walking estimates from the nearest home. For a 15-minute walk score by road, open a district's amenities page and pick a street.

How the amenity data is built

Places come from OpenStreetMap contributors and are classified into groups such as food and drink, health, shops, fitness and parks. Each place gets its own page with distance from nearby homes, opening hours where listed and the closest alternatives.

For the cost of living in the same places, see house prices; for how streets compare, see rankings. A district added to Door Number brings its places here automatically.

Amenities: questions people ask

How many shops, cafés and services does Door Number map?

We map 1,002 places across 3 postcode districts, from OpenStreetMap contributors, and match food businesses to Food Standards Agency hygiene ratings.

Where can I find places open late or on Sundays?

41 places with listed hours stay open past 9pm and 62 open on Sundays. Open a district's amenities page to filter by type and see what is open now.

How are hygiene ratings matched?

Food businesses are matched by name and postcode to the Food Standards Agency register. 111 of the 155 matched businesses hold the top rating of 5.

Where do the opening hours come from?

Opening hours, websites and phone numbers are from OpenStreetMap contributors and may differ from the venue's current hours; businesses can claim their listing to correct them.

Answers use data checked monthly. Sources are named in each answer.

Coverage, limitations and corrections

Every dataset and its licence is listed on the Data sources page. Where a record does not exist we say so rather than estimate. Sold prices lag the market by a few months, floor areas come from energy certificates and can be missing, and straight-line distances are not walking routes.
